Multimedia Education at The University of Melbourne, Australia

The University of Melbourne is Victoria’s premier university in terms of intake and research funding. However, reduced funding and increased student numbers have forced the university to rethink its methods of delivering of educational material. The Vice-Chancellor has coined the phrase ‘Virtual University’, and has implemented funding mechanisms to encourage departments to develop multimedia products.

This talk will discuss some of the initiatives to develop ‘multimedia’ educational material, focussing on engineering applications. I shall also discuss how multimedia fits within the context of an engineering education, and whether commercial computer simulation and design tools should be considered as multimedia learning.

I shall also highlight some of the problems associated with implementing a Virtual University and strategies to overcome these problems, together with more fundamental questions about the role of multimedia in developing skills. I hope that there will be plenty of discussion on these aspects during and following my presentation.
